Q. What level of English or foreign language skills do I need to volunteer?
Daily conversational English is more than sufficient. While local staff, teachers, and children speak English and Swahili, you will find that a warm smile, enthusiastic hand gestures, and an eagerness to connect are the most effective communication tools in Kenya.
Q. How secure are the local project bases and what safety rules apply?
Our primary bases in Embu and Makima are relatively calm and safe rural/semi-rural areas. However, to ensure maximum safety, volunteers are required to follow basic security rules: no walking outside alone after dusk, keeping smartphones and valuables hidden when in public, and following coordinates provided by our local staff who are always ready to accompany and support you.
Q. Will I stay in a homestay or in a guesthouse compound?
As a general rule, volunteers stay inside our secure, dedicated compound guesthouse or in the quarters located inside the AIDS orphanage. This allows volunteers to interact with other staff members and enjoy reliable facilities. If you prefer a homestay experience, we can arrange it locally after you arrive in Kenya.
Q. Can NPO ACEF issue tax-deductible receipts for bank-wire donations?
Yes. Once we confirm the receipt of your bank transfer, NPO ACEF Japan will post an official receipt to your address. Note that commercial bank wires only notify us of the sender's name (without contact details). If you require a receipt, please send us your full name, mailing address, and transfer amount via the
Contact Form beforehand.
